Ocho Sur, a business group dedicated to the sustainable production of oil palm products and derivatives in Ucayali, has reached a significant milestone by obtaining the international “Carbon Measured” certification granted by the Green Initiative certifier.

This certification complies with the international standards promoted by the United Nations (UN), which guarantees the consistency and transparency of the measurement of the company’s carbon footprint and its commitment to sustainable development.

“The Carbon Measured certification from the Green Initiative recognizes that Ocho Sur has carried out a comprehensive measurement of all greenhouse gas emissions throughout its value chain,” said Michael Spoor, CEO of Ocho Sur.

He also added that it is essential for organizations to measure their carbon footprint and incorporate this indicator into the management and goals of their operations, since this allows them to identify mitigation measures and establish action plans to reduce their emissions and achieve a favorable impact. in the fight against climate change.

This initiative, he said, will continue to drive the company to develop low-emission products, thus improving its market positioning and fostering innovation. Likewise, it commits the company to continue protecting natural ecosystems in the Amazon.

According to the CEO of Ocho Sur, obtaining the “Carbon Measured” certification is a rigorous process that consists of three main stages: calculate, mitigate and certify, each with specific substages that guarantee the rigor and quality of the study.

Since the beginning of its operations in 2016, Ocho Sur has been implementing initiatives that have allowed it to reduce its CO2 emissions, such as the generation of renewable electrical energy taking advantage of the biomass of the fruit, minimizing the use of fossil fuels, as well as the correct disposal of methane from the wastewater treatment plant of its production process.

It also highlights the use of solar panels to electrify its camps and reforestation in its forest reserve areas, among other initiatives. According to Green Initiative estimates, in 2022 alone, the company reduced its emissions by almost 13,000 tons of CO2eq due to the policies and measures implemented.

“With these initiatives, Ocho Sur is progressively becoming a benchmark for green businesses in the Peruvian Amazon due to its comprehensive approach to sustainable development, focused on the protection of forests and their biodiversity, the fight against climate change, the economy circularization of its operations and improvement in the quality of life of the local population; thus leading positive change in the region,” said Michael Spoor.

Finally, he stated that Ocho Sur has ambitious plans to continue reducing its CO2 emissions. Therefore, the company will implement an action plan in order to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.
