Ocho Sur, a company dedicated to the sustainable production of oil palm products and derivatives in Ucayali, signed a momentous agreement with the Shambo Porvenir native community, for the conservation of its forests.
The agreement was signed in the Shipibo-Konibo community itself, located in the district of Nueva Requena, between its boss, Bruno Tangoa, and the general manager of the palm oil company, Michael Spoor, with the assistance of its local authorities and the population in general.
The conservation agreement aims for the Shambo Porvenir community to preserve its forests and its wealth of flora and fauna in 803.65 hectares for 25 years, for which Ocho Sur will annually provide an economic incentive for the monitoring and care of the forest, as well as another to improve the standard of living of the population.
“This type of agreement and work between the community and the private company is transcendental, because it marks a milestone in Ucayali. We are at the forefront, we are creating a new model that hopefully others can follow, so that the forests are protected and the lives of the population improve.”, remarked Michael Spoor.
He added that taking care of forests helps combat climate change, one of the most important challenges of our civilization, thus protecting the environment, biodiversity, ecosystems and ways of life.
“They can use their lands for ecotourism, reforestation or other activities they wish. What they cannot do is cut down the forest,” Michael Spoor then remarked.
For his part, Bruno Tangoa was pleased with the support of Ocho Sur to conserve its forests and to improve the standard of living of its population. He explained that, after several months, with many meetings and consultations with the population and the general assembly, the people made the determination to sign the conservation agreement.
“The most important thing is that this agreement directly benefits the population and will allow us to conserve our forests,” highlighted the Apu of the population.
Finally, other leaders and residents of the Shipibo-Konibo people expressed their gratitude to Ocho Sur, “for having Shambo Porvenir in their hearts.”
