Alleged Land Traffickers Invade Ocho Sur’s Conservation Area at Zanja Seca Estate

In response to the illegal invasion and burning of several hectares of forest by alleged land traffickers within a conservation area of the Zanja Seca Estate, owned by Ocho Sur U S.A.C., the company wishes to inform the public of the following:

  1. The company owns the Zanja Seca Estate, located within the districts of Nueva Requena and Curimaná, where we carry out our oil palm cultivation activities. The estate also includes designated conservation areas dedicated to the protection and preservation of forests, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. These are protected, non-intervention areas maintained to safeguard native flora and wildlife.
  2. In recent weeks, a portion of our conservation area near the village of San Juan de Tahuapoa, bordering the demarcated lands of the Kokama Unida Ecológica de Curimaná Indigenous Community, has been invaded by a group of individuals suspected of engaging in illegal land trafficking. These individuals claim to be members of the Kokama community. However, we have determined that they do not belong to this Indigenous community. The alleged trespassers have cleared and burned more than 10 hectares of forest and destroyed the perimeter fence marking the boundary of the conservation area by setting it on fire, committing offenses against private property and causing serious environmental damage.
  3. In the full exercise of its legal rights and in defense of its property and the environment, the company has filed the corresponding criminal complaints with the relevant authorities, formally reporting these serious incidents. The authorities have conducted several on-site investigations and verified the property-related offenses and severe environmental damage caused by these individuals, who are suspected of engaging in illegal land trafficking by attempting to subdivide and sell privately owned land.
  4. Several individuals found at the site have already been identified, while others are still in the process of being identified. The corresponding legal proceedings have been initiated to establish individual responsibility for these acts.
  5. We urge residents and members of neighboring communities surrounding our plantation not to be misled by these unscrupulous individuals, who are allegedly deceiving local farmers by falsely offering land for sale as if it were legally available. Such actions may constitute multiple criminal offenses, which the competent authorities will investigate and sanction as appropriate.
