In the Amazon, traditionally, the frequent alternative to implement artisanal bridges over rivers and natural channels is logging and the use of large logs. In its commitment against deforestation, Grupo Ocho Sur has begun to build its main riverine culverts with cement and steel.
In a series of engineering works, which are currently 50% complete, Ocho Sur has been building long-lasting culverts that will avoid the use of timber logs. The useful life of these new constructions ranges between 50 and 60 years.
In this regard, Krassimir Doldourov, Highway Manager of Grupo Ocho Sur, stated: “We are installing these culverts in our Tibecocha and Zanja Seca farms. In Tibecocha we have 60% progress and in Zanja Seca we have already attended to the critical points, next year we will cover the total.”
These culverts for the streams and pipes not only benefit Grupo Ocho Sur vehicles. “The works also have a positive impact for our neighbors. The entire boundary is being fixed so that the residents of the communities in the area have access all year round, both in the winter (rainy) season and in the summer,” says Doldourov.
These works represent a great advance in the fight against illegal logging of forests. “We hope that, with this experience, our neighbors work on their bridges and culverts in the same way, without damaging nature,” Doldourov concludes.
