The Ocho Sur business group, dedicated to the sustainable production of palm products and by-products in Ucayali, highlighted the 2020 Annual Regional Trade Report of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), which highlights the growth of 39% of the exports from the region in 2020, driven by exports of palm oil and derivatives.
He specified that these represented almost half of Ucayali’s exports and grew by 130% versus the previous year, thanks to the launch of the business group’s modern transformation plant in April 2020.
In this way, Peruvian exports from the Ucaya region reached US$44.7 million dollars, growing for the third consecutive year.
“This is very good news for Peru, the Amazon and a source of pride for the people of the Ucayali region,” said Michael Spoor, general manager of Grupo Ocho Sur.
He stressed that it is the first time that non-traditional products from this region surpass the export of wood and demonstrates that palm is a very attractive alternative for the economic and social development of Ucayali and the entire Amazon.
“Moreover, it is also an alternative for the fight against illegal coca leaf cultivation and drug trafficking, which has been increasing alarmingly in recent years,” he said.
Likewise, the general manager mentioned that the area planted with palm in Peru represents 0.1% of the total area of the Peruvian Amazon, so this crop is perfectly compatible both with the objective of caring for the Amazon forests and with the long-awaited development. economic and social of the Peruvian Amazon.
“The Ocho Sur group ratifies its commitment to sustainable and responsible palm activity, as well as to the development of the country, the Ucayali region and its people. We are proud to be a leading company in the region and to be the largest formal employer benefiting thousands of families,” Spoor stressed.
