Promoting development without deforestation is a significant challenge for the Amazonian regions of Peru. The Sustainable Supply Chain Program is an initiative by Ocho Sur to ensure the traceability and sustainability of agricultural products through small farmers. We aim to have this be a feasible and scalable model for large-scale sustainable development in rural tropical regions.

Transforming degraded lands into productive and agroforestry systems is a real and sustainable alternative for thousands of small and medium-sized farmers. Currently, we have more than 130 clients developing oil palm on 1,600 hectares of land.

Although this project is still in its early stages, we have already seen successful results. Since 2020, we have purchased more than $8.8 million from our small producers.

We track our farmers using satellite imagery from GeoBosques to ensure that any land we purchase palm from has not been deforested after the deadline set by the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation, December 31, 2020.

All small producers who want to partner with Ocho Sur must complete a rigorous induction process.

Through this process, we ensure that our palm oil is traceable while providing small producers with access to a formal and sustainable market. We hope to expand this project throughout Ucayali to reduce pressure on forests and offer small producers the opportunity to improve their quality of life.
