COMMUNICATION FOR THE MURDER OF THE ASHÁNINKA LEADER

The directors and workers of the Ocho Sur business group express:

  1. Our regret and solidarity with the family of the Asháninka indigenous leader Santiago Contoricón Antúnez, murdered in Puerto Ocopa last Saturday. Likewise, we express our categorical condemnation of such an execrable homicide and demand that the police and judicial authorities conduct a prompt and effective investigation that identifies the material and intellectual authors of the same.
  2. We ratify our categorical repudiation of any situation of violence that endangers the physical integrity and freedom of indigenous leaders and human rights defenders of the Peruvian Amazon. We also reaffirm our commitment to coordinate actions with all individual or institutional actors present in the locality in which we operate, to strengthen social and institutional response capacities in the face of any risk of violence that could affect the free development of indigenous and indigenous organizations. of its leaders.
  3. Our repudiation of such situations of violence emanates from the ethical conviction of our shareholders, managers and workers, and also generates risks for our business group that operates in full compliance with the law and that has been playing a significant role in promoting formality in Ucayali.
  4. The behavior of some actors who claim to defend the interests of indigenous peoples and the protection of the environment, characterized by zero attachment to the truth and a total intolerance towards the possibility of dialogue with those who think differently, is a factor that contributes to increase the risks to which indigenous leaders and human rights defenders in the Peruvian Amazon are exposed in the face of threats from those carrying out illegal economic activities. Given this, we insist on our vocation for dialogue, based on truth and mutual respect, which is a fundamental condition to stop violence in the Amazon.
